Injury Blow for France: Antoine Dupont Suffers Fractured Cheekbone in World Cup Triumph against Namibia
France’s Rugby World Cup hopes have taken a hit with captain Antoine Dupont suffering a fractured cheekbone in their 96-0 win over Namibia.
The 2021 World Player of the Year was forced off in the 46th minute after a head-on collision with Namibia’s Johan Deysel, who was red carded for the tackle.
The French Rugby Federation confirmed Dupont has a maxillo-zygomatic fracture. He will see a specialist to determine how long he’ll be sidelined.
The 26-year-old scrum-half remains with the squad ahead of their final pool match against Italy on October 6th. The World Cup quarterfinals are October 14-15, with the final on October 28th.
Losing Dupont would be a major blow to France’s chances of winning their first World Cup. The Six Nations Player of the Tournament the last two years, he’s unbeaten as France captain in 14 home tests.
Deysel has reached out to apologize: “I meant no harm. I spoke with France’s coach to send my best wishes and apologies.”
Dupont’s injury leaves France with two fit scrum-halves. He’s expected to be out 4-6 weeks but could return if France reach the semifinals in 5 weeks. The attack coach said Dupont hasn’t “finished the competition” and will stay with the squad.
